Life in Pompeii Essay

The amphitheatre was built in 70bc by the magistrates to provide entertainment for the people of Pompeii. The Pompeii amphitheatre is the oldest surviving amphitheatre in the Roman world. The capacity was 24000 and because seats were numbered, only the most important people of Pompeii would be allowed to sit at the front. The amphitheatre was mainly used for games that lasted a week and were funded by the magistrates. While entering the stadium, the people would salute the important dignitaries. Political Life: The amphitheatre was built by magistrates and events were fully funded by them aswell. Although built for the whole city to enjoy, only special people could sit at the front. Cultural Life: The amphitheatre was made from stone and included a parapet that separated the stand from the arena. The parapet was decorated with frescoes of gladiatorial combat which over time have been lost. Events that were primarily used at the amphitheatre were gladiatorial battles, hunts, and wild beast fights. The Basilica Economic and Political Life: The Basilica was a structure in the Forum where legal and business activities took place. It was built in-between 120bc and 78bc and was 24 by 55 metres in size. The basilica was originally a market but was changed in the first century to become the new law courts Cultural Life: The Basilica was covered by a large, double pitched tiled roof and the entrance had five doors with wooden shutters, the large hall was surrounded by twenty eight ionic columns, 11 metres in height. On the west side, stood a two story structure known as the Tribunal which was guarded by a statue of Augustus. The marbel panels on the side walls were decorated in the first style art and graffiti was found everywhere, not unusual in Pompeii. The Baths: Economic life: Just about everyone except slaves and the poor visited the baths as not only was it a place for cleaning but also a social hub. The baths would be opened at around midday and remained open well into the evening. Most people were accompanied by slaves who assisted them with their cleaning. Political life: Pompeii had four main baths, the forum baths, the stabian baths, the central baths and the amphitheatre baths. The stabian baths were the oldest and biggest baths in Pompeii and date as far back as the early 4th century. The baths has a Apodyterium, a frigidarium, a tepiderium, a caldarium, toilets and the stabian baths featured a swimming pool. Usually the baths were divided between men and women and when this wasn’t the case, men and women would attend the baths at different times. There was however mixed bathing in some places. Cultural Life: Apart from cleaning, at the baths people also enjoyed physical activity and sport at the palestra. There was also massage, music, poetry, reading and business contacts to be made. Graffiti and wall drawings also depicted sexual activity at the baths. Women wore modest clothing and men wore either trunks or bathed naked. The floor was made of square stones and supported brick columns and there was space between the tiles and walls because of the use of the special nipple tiles. The hot air generated from the furnace located at the back of the caldarium would flow up between the tiles and the wall, heating all the rooms. Via Del Abbondanza The Via Dell Abbondanza was the main street of Pompeii and the main business district of the city. The streetscape had a grid like pattern which although was popular in other roman times, was not precisely applied in Pompeii. The street contained stepping stones so that when it had been raining, people didn’t have to walk through sewage. There was enough room between stones for wheeled traffic aswell. Deep groove marks in the roads indicate to us that there was alot of wheeled traffic on the road. There were two different roads, the Decumani and the Cardines. The decumani ran east to west and the cardines ran north to south. On cross roads there were shrines called nymphaea which were water fountains. Via Stabiana: The Via Stabiana stretches from the Porta Stabia to the center of the city. Along this street, on the west side is the Gladiators’ Barracks and the Odeon. There were stepping stones to allow pedestrians to cross the street without stepping into whatever might be in the street itself. Carriages could still travel along the streets, their wheels passing between the stepping stones. On the east are a number of residences and shops, including a bakery with an oven which is seen as a hole in the wall with a large stone above it. Next door is a thermapolium with a counter containing four pottery jars sunk into the counter. Further along on the Via Stabiana is the Domus of Q. Octavius Romulus. Villa of the Papyri: The Villa of the papyri is a large residential complex situated on the slope of Vesuvius in Herculaneum. Judging from the size and value of the house, it can be said that the owner of the house was extremely wealthy. Unlike other ancient roman houses, it had its own water supply which in those days was extreme luxury. It was decorated with statues and columns of Greek influence. Praedia of Julia Felix: Julia Felix was an extremely wealthy woman from Pompeii who inherited her fortune from family. She owned a large estate which was decorated with floral motifs, statues and scenes of the Nile river aswell as a shrine to Isis the Egyptian goddess.

Immigration to Canada

Immigration is when one leaves their country of origin and move to another. The topic if immigration has always been a very delicate subject. This is due to the many problems immigrants have had to face in their new country. Today issues dealing with immigration are not as bad as they were many years ago. Immigration in Canada was not as popular then as it is now. During the 1900s-1918 not all migrants were treated with the same respect and acceptance as others. Immigrant and potential immigrants had to face many hardships. Firstly, during the 1900’s-1918 the population in Canada was low; and the government started campaigning for people to come to Canada however there was much â€Å"red tape† as to who could and couldn’t come. Secondly, those who immigrated to Canada were unsuccessful as there was a big regional difference. Lastly, the Aboriginals also known as first nation’s people were not treated well. The Aboriginals rights were not kept, and they where thought of as bad people who did not matter. In the nineteen hundreds immigration to Canada was problematic. People migrate to a country because of its many pull factors. However a country like Canada in the 1900’s had as many push factors as it does pull factor. In the 1900’s Canada was not very populated, it was so under populated the Prime Minister Laurier was scared that the Americans would come and overtake their land. Charles Sifton was hired to ensure that the Americans did not become a problem. Sifton started a campaign known as â€Å"The Last Best West. † It is known to have caused one of the biggest migrations of our times. However as previously mentioned there was a lot of â€Å"red tape. † Sifton carefully chose applicants and many potential immigrants faced discrimination. Sifton wanted English people and since there was so much British people others were classifies as â€Å"too different. † These were the Asians, Japanese, Indian and Chinese. These people were discouraged from coming however, those who did come faced major racial discrimination. Unfortunately, when times got hard the English started returning home and many were discouraged from coming. Once again immigration problems got worst and the population really became a big issue. When people move to a different country they have to adapt to a new way of life. Immigrants to Canada, in the 1900 have found it very hard to adapt. This was due to Canada’s physical diversity. A major problem for immigrants was climate. Many people were not able to manage the brutal Canadian winters, and unlike know only clothing and fire would have been available to keep people warm. Another difference was the terrain, soil and natural resources. The English farmers were not used to farming in the extreme conditions many failed, also many could not grow their crops the same way as the soil and terrain was a different. Many people died, became sick or fled back to England. This caused problems for all who lived in Canada, as all the positives about the country were becoming deficient. One’s home is where the heart is and no one likes their home been invaded by strangers. As humans, when unfamiliar things enter our lives we tend to fight them. This is what happened with the aboriginal people in Canada in the 1900’s. The aboriginals land were been taken over, and they did not like it. At first the aboriginals helped the English and saw them as a great source of income. However, the government started taking their rights and they started to rebel against the immigrants. These cause the immigrants to flee and return home and certainly not with good things to say about Canada. In the nineteen hundreds immigration to Canada was problematic and unpopular. The country was under populated yet had strict rules about who could and couldn’t reside in the country. Immigration to Canada in the nineteen hundreds caused much racial discrimination, many deaths and left immigrants with many negative things to voice about Canada. However, not withstanding it still is for one to realize that even though Canada has had and still does have a very huge issue with immigration it still helped define Canada today.

Essay about Mittell’s Television Genre Theory and Louie

Originally published in Cinema Journal 40, No. 3, Spring 2001, Jason Mittell’s â€Å"A Cultural Approach to Television Genre Theory† conceives of television genre as a cultural category rather than merely a textual component. In the decade since the original publishing of the article, television has evolved out of the multi-channel era and into the post-network era. In this new television landscape, genres are no longer a fixed entity1, and there is great academic potential in the in the study of television genres. The text, Thinking Outside the Box: A Contemporary Television Genre Reader, aims to explore and analyze genre in the current television landscape, and the Mittell article, republished in the book, serves as an entry point to such†¦show more content†¦Finally, this concept of genre will be applied to the development of the central questions in my final project. LOUIE: A GENERIC DISCOURSE Mittell suggests that genre studies should negotiate between specificity and generality, and offers the following as an approach: â€Å"The second way would be to start with a specific media case study and analyze how genre processes operate within this specific instance. Such projects might isolate a variety of starting points—an industrial formation, audience practices, a textual instance, a policy decision, or a moment in social history. We may start with a textual case to motivate our study, but we must still examine how genres transcend textual boundaries and operate within audience and industry practices as well.3† Also, according to the article, â€Å"we should focus on the breadth of discursive enunciations around any given instance, mapping out as many articulations of genre as possible and situating them within larger cultural contexts and relations of power.4† So, any generic discourse must begin with a full understanding of the context of a particula r text—in this case, Louie. Louis C.K. is one of the most influential and respected stand-up comedians working today. He has written for The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with

Chipotle s Organizational Structure Is Centered On The...

Chipotle’s organizational structure is centered on the functional structure. The top levels of management include the co-CEOs, CFO, Head-Media Relations, and Chief Creative and Development Officer CCDO (Chipotle). Chipotle is a smaller corporation relative to its competitors, which allows it to focus on a vertical hierarchy based on functions. The fact that there are few departments demonstrates that Chipotle is still a growing corporation. Chipotle is a highly centralized corporation as all of its stores are corporate owned and they must follow the rules set by the corporate headquarters this involves the same menu throughout the country and the same prices. The restaurant business follows high levels of formalization a set of guidelines must be followed in order to comply with food and health regulations. There is low division of labor at the restaurant level as those cooking can shift to serving and cleaning when needed, allowing the allocation of labor to match whatever is needed in the situation. A unique aspect of Chipotle’s upper management is the fact that there are two CEOs (Feloni). The two CEO help ease job functions and enables them to be more accessible. Another managerial aspect of Chipotle is the through the position of restaurateur. There are 183 of these positions and they work to manage several Chipotles, bringing management close to each store (Investor’s Business Daily). Perception - Motivation - Leadership - Organizational Change and Culture

Question: Discuss about thePerception, Motivation, Leadership, Organizational Change and Culture. Answer: Introduction Culture is an important aspect in the world. In any given setup i.e. a workplace and in the community culture plays an influencing role in a persons perception, leadership styles, motivation and organizational change. An individuals perception about something is influenced by the moral values the person holds, while culture determines the type of incentive a person requires. Different cultures place various values on incentive i.e. some like money more while others like presents a lot. This assignment focuses on perception, motivation, leadership, organizational change and culture relativity. Perception For the purpose of this report, I have chosen 12 years a Slave directed by Steve McQueen. The movie portrayed the picture of slavery in the 19th century. The film follows the tribulations of a man kidnapped from New York in 1841 and sold later as a slave in the south. The slave stripped of real identity, humanity, and his roots are later renamed Platt by his owner called Ford. The film had a lot to show depicting of the pain, sorrow, humiliation and suffering that slaves went through (Li, 2014, p.330). What I particularly liked about the movie is that each scene is engaging and capturing the attention of the audience. The movie tells the slavery story like no any other movie has done before. Fred, a colleague of mine also watched the movie but had different views about the film. He did not like it as he deemed it too horrific. Fred views the film as being too bloody and inhumane. He particularly pins points out the fact that the story line is lightning but the approach the director took was not the best. For me, the movie is an eye catcher, and the approach the director took was the best. Steve McQueen portrays slavery as it was and if you watch the movie never can you support slavery. Motivation Motivation can be defined as the desire and ambition of someone to do something or achieve a set goal. Organizations often us different ways to motivate their staff as there is no single best way. Some organizations use financial incentives, some non-financial benefits while other companies combine both the financial and the non-financial aspects of motivation (King and Mclnerney, 2014, p.179). For example, Daimler Financial Services holds big team events; they carry out motivational training, and some of its subsidiaries occasionally cook together and distribute baskets of fruits to employees. To make it a great place to work list, most if not all of these firms engage in corporate social responsibility thus motivating their employees a lot. To motivate employees, organizations create a standard culture that supports diversity. Companies such as Mars and Microsoft have re-engineered their communication channels and encourage their employees to take control of their tasks. This means there is minimal supervision, and an employee feels trusted and motivation. Microsoft encourages their staff to learn to keep being innovative. Microsoft offers tuition assistance to her employees. Another way these organizations use to motivate employees is by creating a good rapport built on openness and trust between the management and staff. Companies like firms engage more in CSR and ensure that each employee spends at least 40 hours in a year as volunteers to help their communities. Leadership Leadership is the ability of a person to influence the action and the thoughts of others towards the accomplishment of a common goal. Trait theory of leadership is based on a belief that leaders have certain specific traits while the behavioral theory believes that a leader has to behave in a certain way. Trait theory assumes that leaders are born with specific traits that enable an individual to be a great leader while behavioral theory does not believe in leaders being born with inherent potential (DeMatthews, 2014, p. 198). According to behavioral theory, any person can become a leader provided they acquire some training while trait theory believes that not everyone is born a leader. Organizations can select and develop capable leaders by training, delegating and successful succession planning. Firms can choose great leaders at recruitment and selection. During the hiring process, candidates with leadership skills, talent and experience could be identified. Organizations develop great leaders by training and succession planning. Through training, the leaders are impacted with the required skills that suit specific positions inside the firm. Delegation is another approach a lot of organizations are embracing. Through delegation, a potential leader is identified and then given tasks related to the position he is intended to occupy in the future. Succession planning helps an employee get acquitted with specifics of a job transforming him into a great leader. Organizational Change A sustaining innovation is one that does not significantly affect an existing market (Pratt, 2010, p. 12). In the past year, I have had the chance to interact with a variety of sustaining innovations. For the purpose of this report, the five innovations I have chosen are the Microsoft Office 365, WhatsApp call, WhatsApp document sharing, Uber and mobile banking apps. The emergence of these significant innovations has significantly improved lives. The Microsoft Office 365 offers consumers e-mail and social networking services and cloud storage services. Users can access their information from anywhere quickly. WhatsApp has combined many uses into a single app. Initially, it was just a messaging app, but now it has undergone various improvements to enable calls via the internet and document sharing. Disruptive innovation changes the basis of competition in the industry (Cortez, 2014, p. 177). The five disruptive innovations I will focus on are the transistor radio, Facebook, Personal computer, online marketing, and television. The advent of these inventions was greatly affected by prevailing market conditions, but they later changed the market and the industries as well. Facebook has helped my life as I can access and disseminate information from anywhere. Personal computers are useful in the completion of assignments and entertainment. Both the disruptive and the sustaining innovations have positively affected my life and added a lot of benefits. Cultures Culture is the collection of a groups beliefs, customs, arts, values, myths, and taboos. It is a way of life. Organizations as legal entities have a developed culture that guides their activities. Cultural relativism involves regarding the values, beliefs, and practices of culture from the viewpoint of that culture itself (Sikka, 2012, p. 51). Culture influences a persons interpersonal skills, group behavior, and leadership style. An individual will always behave according to the values he or she holds. Human resource practices are influenced by the prevailing culture especially human resource policies. To develop effective human resource policies a human resource manager has to use the culture as a guiding principle. Predominant leadership style is culturally relative. Motivation is a critical issue that depends on a lot of cultures. Not every employee can be motivated the in the same way. Some employees are motivated by financial gains while some are not materialistic culturally an d will settle for non-financial incentives. A good leader understands the prevailing culture and respects the values and beliefs of others. Culture is a crucial tool in any given society. Conclusion In conclusion, culture influences the perception, motivation technique, leadership style and organization change. People who share a similar culture are likely to hold the same perception and attitude about something. Factors that are culture relative need critical culture consideration for their success. The Entrepreneurial Process free essay sample

Many successful entrepreneurs tend to follow a process to develop their businesses. This process contains four stages toward achieving their dreams. The processes are identifying an opportunity, developing a business plan, assessing the need for resources, and finally developing a management program designed to achieve success. The entrepreneur must develop an understanding of this process as an important step. Developing an understanding of the entrepreneurial process can determine if a business venture is to be successful. Some phases of the entrepreneurial process may appear more important than the others but in reality each phase must be completed in succession in order for the process, and the business venture to be successful. The first of the entrepreneurial process is to identify opportunity. This is sometimes referred to as the business model innovation (Barringer, 2008). It is during this phase that the entrepreneur must identify that in need for its product or service exists. This identification process attempts to analyze a possible target market that may exist for the use of this product or service. The acceptance by the target market must be analyzed for the potential use of any new product and the need for the product or service must be identified and analyzed also. It is also during this phase that the existence of a similar product or service can be discovered in the competition from the business environment can be compared for possible development of a product niche within the existing market. Identifying a business opportunity develops the entrepreneurial process through the development of an idea. As the identification of the opportunity advances to the next phase, evaluation and feasibility analysis begins. Once the identification process has been completed the time comes for the evaluation and feasibility analysis to be initiated so that a proper business plan can be developed. It is during this phase the entrepreneur is to evaluate the feasibility of the assembled and assess the assets that are available or need to be assembled. This assessment must be done honestly and directly, and done so to ensure the successful launching of a new business opportunity. It is also during this period or phase that a financial assessment should be completed. It is during this part of the process the needed capital to cover startup costs, and costs associated to sustain this new business venture for several years as determined. There should be sufficient money to cover all aspects of the business venture from salaries, manufacturing and distribution costs, and all other tangible aspects needed for a successful business venture. Once an analysis is completed of the organization a business plan needs to be written so all members of the entrepreneurial team can share a common direction. The business plan should include strategic resources, interpersonal attributes of the assembled entrepreneurial team, and the necessary capital to launch this new business venture. The business plan can include directions in dealing with established partnerships or company stakeholders to provide structure to the business relationships needed to acquire success. Once all aspects of the business plan have been created and ratified through analysis the third phase of the entrepreneurial process can begin. The third phase of the entrepreneurial process is to identify the resources needed. These resources can range from the tangible to the intangible. During this phase key personnel and strategic resources are identified and acquired to enhance the continued success of a newly launched business. Care must be taken not to underestimate the amount or variety of resources needed (Hisrich, 2005). Identifying and acquiring the right people for the right job at the right time can be difficult and time-consuming. It is during this phase of the entrepreneurial process of acquiring the essential resources to successfully launch and maintain a business venture can be analyzed and developed to ensure business success. It is also during this phase the needed monetary funds are obtained and allocated by the proper division to ensure that the scarce resources of a newly found business can be directed appropriately to once again obtain business success. Once all of the three aforementioned phases are completed the launching of the newly formed business is at hand. With the launching of a newly developed entrepreneurial business there must be personnel in place to ensure the develop business plan is followed. Managing scarce resources and personnel during the day to day operations of the business must be done in such a manner that will sustain a successful startup of the business. This type of managing should include extending the elationship of the business to customers and stakeholders alike. Managing finances, advertising, distribution, and other multiple areas of the business takes the right individual. It takes the right individual to implement on a daily basis established business plan developed through prior phases and analysis. The phases of the entrepreneurial process unique to the development of the entrepreneurial business venture. Placing a higher value to one phase over another can be an extremely difficult endeavor. Place a higher value to one phase of the entrepreneurial process over another may lead to the belief that certain phases of the process can be ignored or performed poorly. Each phase of the entrepreneurial process should hold no higher ranking than the other. All processes must be completed entirely to ensure that the entrepreneurial venture is launched in a manner that leads to success. This being said, if one phase must be considered more important than the others, then that phase would be the identifying of the idea or opportunity that began the process of entrepreneurship. From an individual standpoint the most important phase the entrepreneurial process is that of identifying the idea or opportunity for developing a new business. It is through the entrepreneurs idea or belief that an opportunity for a new business exists that the energy and enthusiasm to propel and sustain the entrepreneurial process is derived. Entrepreneurs are noted for their consistent tenacity directed toward achieving a goal and constantly moving forward even in the face of adversity. This must come from the passion held for the idea that drives the entrepreneur to get up early, work harder, and sacrifice more than other individuals. The most important one of the four phases in the entrepreneurial process for the Corporation would be in the development of a successful business plan. A successful business plan is developed through the collaboration of members of the entrepreneur team. It is through this collaboration that every aspect of the entrepreneurial process is examine and analyze to ensure probable success the launching of the new business. The stakeholders and investors need to be reasonably assured in the success of the newly formed business and this can only be done through providing an accurately detailed business plan. The entrepreneurial process has greatly influenced the delivery of health care products and services throughout the country. Many entrepreneurs have identified an ideal or opportunity and launched businesses such as ambulance services and in-home physical therapy for recently discharged orthopedic patients. These entrepreneurs have provided services that are essential to the delivery of needed health care services both for the safety and convenience of the customer. These entrepreneurs have changed the way health care services are delivered by taking something that was once hospital-based and applying the same expertise in the convenience of the customers home. Entrepreneurs are finding ways to bring innovative, customer oriented health care to market (Howard, 2008). Entrepreneurs will continue to influence the delivery of health care whenever an idea or opportunity presents itself.
